Wesley Chapel sits about 25 miles north of Tampa, up I-75 and out along State Road 56. Thirty years ago most of this ground was cattle pasture and pine flatwoods. Wesley Chapel grew from under 6,000 people in 2000 to roughly 65,000 by the 2020 census. New homes keep going up in Epperson, Watergrass, Union Park, and the villages around Wiregrass Ranch. Pasco County keeps landing on lists of the fastest growing counties in the country. That growth is what brings our excavators and dump trucks up here from Tampa.
Fast growth changes what a property owner around here actually needs from a contractor. Some parcels on the east side are still raw acreage, thick with palmetto and pine. Other lots sit inside built-out streets and hold an older house or a leaning garage. Both jobs start the same way, with heavy equipment and a plan for where the material goes. A lot of Wesley Chapel work starts with land clearing. The parcel is wooded, the ground is soft, and no truck can reach the back of it. We bring in excavators and skid steers to pull the brush and the stumps. Root balls come out whole, because buried wood rots and settles under a slab. Cleared material gets loaded into our own dump trucks and hauled off the property. We open a stable path in first, so concrete and lumber trucks can reach the pad.
Site preparation is the next step, and it is where the lot starts to look buildable. We cut the pad to the elevation the plans call for and compact it. Fill dirt comes in on our trucks when the pad has to sit higher than the ground around it. We spread that fill in lifts and run a plate compactor over each one. We also dig for footers and trench for utility lines before the slab goes down. Pasco County inspects along the way, so the grade and the compaction have to hold.
Wesley Chapel is flat ground, and flat ground moves water slowly. Rain comes hard from June through September, mostly in afternoon and evening storms. In the newer communities the lots are tight and the pads sit close together. Water that leaves one yard has to go somewhere, and it usually stops at the next low spot. We regrade the yard so the fall carries runoff away from the slab and into the swale. Land grading is slow work, because a few inches across a long run decide the result.
The older rural pockets around Wesley Chapel have a different problem. Many of those houses went in on acreage decades before the newer subdivisions. Ditches fill with sand and culverts plug, so the driveway turns into a pond. We clean the ditch line back out and reset the pipe at the right fall. Where a yard stays soggy, we install a drainage system with pipe and stone. That drainage system carries water to a point where it can leave the property. Our backhoe and excavators do the digging, and the spoil leaves on our dump trucks.
