Most of our concrete removal work is residential. Driveways are the biggest piece of it, usually a slab that has cracked or lifted at the joints. We also take out back patios, pool decks, sidewalks, front walkways and porch slabs. On lots where a house or garage came down, we break out the old foundation and footers. Concrete demolition on a lot like that is heavier work than a patio. Shed pads, mailbox bases, walkway steps and old post footings are small jobs. We take those too when the equipment is already on the property.
Breaking concrete is loud, quick work. The hauling is what takes the day. We break the slab with an excavator, then load the pieces with a skid steer or a loader. The machines are ours and so are the dump trucks. A 4-inch slab weighs about 50 pounds per square foot, so a small driveway can run past 10 tons. A truck hits its weight limit well before the bed looks full. Because we run our own trucks, the pieces leave as we break them. On most residential jobs the concrete is off the property the same day.
We price concrete removal by what it weighs and how hard it is to reach. Thickness comes first. A patio poured at 4 inches breaks up fast. A thicker driveway poured for truck traffic takes longer. Rebar and wire mesh inside the slab slow it down. The steel has to be cut before the pieces move. Square footage sets the total tonnage and the number of truck loads. Then there is access. A driveway at the street loads straight into the truck. A pool deck behind a locked gate takes more handling per piece.
Nobody can price a slab from a photo. We come out, look at the concrete and check the thickness at a broken edge. We also look at where a truck can park. Pull a slab and you find soft ground underneath. There is usually a layer of sand or crushed base rock under the old pour. It sits loose once the concrete is gone. We rake it out and pull the leftover chunks along the edges. We pick broken pieces out of the dirt too. Buried chunks turn into a problem the next time someone digs. On a driveway job we stop the breakout at a straight line where the old concrete met the garage floor. That gives the new pour a clean edge to start from.
What comes next depends on your plan. If you are pouring new concrete, the pad needs to be level and compacted before the forms go in. If the slab is coming out for good, the low spot gets filled and graded. The finished grade should carry water away from the house. Either way we can bring in fill dirt with the same trucks.
